    Charlie Larkey ended up flying competition aerobatics and teaching me to fly aerobatics out of Santa Paula, CA. . For a time he lived in FL at a fly-in/runway. Great pilot. I lost track of him too. FYI

    I obsessively started playing at 47 knew nothing I just wanted learn and get better at something and not be a fat lazy old man 6 months later I was in a band now at 62 I rehearse practice or gig everyday played and made freinds with super talented even famous musicians in different bands different genres I learn songs on the spot and get paid to go to parties and make people happy tap their toes and dance I feel so blessed I did'nt take any lessons but listen to John"s never to late encourgement thank you FBPO

    Hi Jon, great interview, I enjoyed it. I discovered Marco just a few months ago after I watched him play in some collaboration videos with Alfonso André (drummer for Caifanes). I was blown away by his playing. I didn’t know he was the son of Marco Mendoza!

    I feel like the main people you look up to while you grow up playing are your heaviest influences, subconsciously or not. I was lucky enough to grow up around some of the best players because of a very well known world famous bass player from my town, and still to this day I always think would this impress “so and so”? In any aspect of my playing. I feel like I’ll never think I’ll be able to match or surpass their abilities and styles, even if I do because I grew up seeing these monster players gigging

    Good stuff Jon. Funny thing about All My Lovin -- it's both crude and sophisticated. And all in first position, which makes sense since he had to sing it at the same time. And I'd add that Mac's walk in the chorus of "I'm a Loser" is basically the hook of the song. Absolutely brilliant.

    Hello Jon, love this video. I have been putting my signature on songs I have covered for years. It is something that I love to do and helps me stay motivated and creative in my bass playing. As you suggest if helps to move the song along and if it needs it. I put my on spin on many a classic cover. They way you know it works is if someone notices it a it puts a smile on their face :). Playing bass for over 50 years and still learning stuff everyday.

    It really burns me up when I think about Jaco Being homeless at the end of his career and Getting beaten to death by a night club Bouncer. That's the music business for you. When you make them money, they back You up. When you have problems or need Help, you are yesterday's news.

      @@ForBassPlayersOnly This is personal for me. My brother was an incredible bass player. He was Manic depressant too. He didn't read music, just listened to any song and had the bass line down in 10 minutes flat. He played piano and was the lead singer as well. He as about Jaco's age too, Just an amazing talent with packed shows for over 30 years. Not a song writer though. The legacy will always be there and that is something that is priceless,

    Jaco had Manic depression. That is way above bipolar. In Mania, the brain runs like a turbo charger. For Jaco the musician, that meant incredible Music creations and excess energy... After that, there's a system crash. He couldn't Just sleep it off or take medication either.

    The key to Rocco’s sound was his Left Hand Muting. He explains and shows it in his instructional video…available free on RUclips! Really a great reveal….because the Sound is obvious when you hear it… but not obvious to watch…. He was a great and fun guy. Glad I got to meet him:)

    Greatest respect to someone like Ardy who learned to play guitar AND bass left handed just to add to the authenticity of the show. I think Lenie Colacino from the original Beatlemania cast was the only other lefty Paul from what I can tell. Just amazing stuff. And what a great voice. He's the whole package.

    Another great interview Jon! I am one of those over 50 sorehanders! I am a student of Phil’s, and I am compelled to comment that what we saw on this interview is 100% accurate and true. Anyone who studied with Phil will see how lucky they are to have such a rareity….a working musician with such a high level teaching pedigree and communication skills. It just seems right that Phil gets this exposure for all his hard work. Jon, excellent interview highlighting a humble master!
